A note about 2021: GOALS will look different this year! While we can’t go on a backpacking trip, we are still focused on transforming STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) by increasing diversity and investing in the professional and personal development of young women and girls. GOALS 2021 will be a combination of hands-on science and leadership opportunities, networking with women and gender-expansive scientists, and fantastic mentoring experiences. We will provide an inclusive environment and all the materials needed for you to develop leadership, communication and creative thinking skills, all of which will help prepare you for life after high school. We will be providing a virtual program in summer 2021, and we will follow all public health guidelines on any in-person events. Scholar applications are now available and are due May 24th!
GOALS – Girls’ Outdoor Adventure in Leadership and Science – is a free summer science program for high school girls and gender-expansive youth to learn science hands-on while backpacking through Sequoia National Park. In a two-week immersive program led by UC Davis and National Park scientists, GOALS scholars learn how to design and conduct field-based scientific experiments while developing leadership and outdoor skills.
We believe in the power of young people as leaders, scientists, and outdoors persons. GOALS is an opportunity for people who have had that experience of walking into a classroom, a lab, or an outdoor space and finding that no one else looked like them. If you’ve doubted that you belong in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) or the outdoors, GOALS is for you. We particularly encourage people of color, trans, nonbinary, genderqueer, and LGBTQ+ people to get involved with GOALS: this is for you!
