About: GOALS – Girls’ Outdoor Adventure in Leadership and Science – is a free summer science program for high school girls, inclusive of all trans, cis, genderqueer, and nonbinary youth who identify with girlhood, to learn science hands-on while backpacking through the wilderness. Over the course of 2 weeks, students from backgrounds underrepresented in STEM learn ecology, earth science, and chemistry in the Sierra Nevadas. Summer 2018 marks the first GOALS trip. GOALS volunteers work year round to make GOALS a reality; we need your help to promote GOALS effectively!

Level: Internship for UC Davis academic credit

Commitment: 3+ hours/week* on your schedule. Duration is flexible (two quarters minimum required)

*3 hours/week is required, but you may work more hours. 30 hours worked= 1 UCD unit.

Start date: As soon as possible. We hope you will begin during the summer of 2018


  • Experience publicizing an exciting new program and working with a team committed to science education for youth from backgrounds underrepresented in STEM
  • Gain skills using social media and infographics to relate to a wide audience


  • Oversees GOALS Facebook, Twitter (@girlsoutdoorsci), and Instagram (@girlsoutdoorscience)
  • Posts to each social media account 3-5 times/week
  • Conducts research on underrepresented minorities in STEM and the outdoors
  • Compiles a list of blogs/ podcasts / individuals and reaches out to them for publicity
  • Gives feedback on and/or helps create outreach materials
  • Completes other tasks assigned by the GOALS publicity chair(s)


  • UC Davis student, preferably in Communications or a related major
  • Interest in STEM and the outdoors
  • Experience publicizing a program is preferred, but not required
